Intrepid investigator Fiona Thorne can’t rest when there’s a mystery to solve. Following the revelations and excitement of PRESSED, there’s not even time for a coffee break before the next adventure begins. This is a travel coffee mug situation y’all!

Here’s a little, spoiler-free, glimpse into the future:

After seeing firsthand the magical destruction the Painted Edge is capable of, Fiona is committed to stopping their leader. And she’s not alone.

Marcius Festinius Cervidus, better known as Dodger, is a friend who happens to work for The Travel Guild. But Fiona doesn’t hold that against him. When tackling the biggest threat that the worlds of The Book have seen in decades, who better to work with?

Their mission: locate an undercover spy amongst the sun-bleached deserts, pirate-infested seas, and crumbling empire of the Page of Kerus. It’s also Dodger’s birthplace, which is something he’s never really talked about.

Actually, there’s a lot that Dodger doesn’t talk about, including his life before joining the Guild. What’s that about?

Secrets will be revealed, friendships tested, and, hopefully, enemies will be caught on the back foot or hoof, paw, claw, fin, etc. in Book Four of The Planar Pages series, FRAYED EDGES.

Join the adventure!

Are you a new Wanderer here? Welcome! You can start your Fiona adventures with book 1, BETWEEN THE LINES, or sign up for my newsletter to receive a Fiona Thorne mystery for free.

Dodger’s a complicated one. I’ve known him since he was just a cub, picked him up off the streets when he had nowhere else to go. I could see something in him back then—a fire, a drive that the streets hadn’t yet snuffed out. He’s always been loyal to the Guild, and he’s proven himself time and again as one of the best jackets we’ve got. He’s quick, smart, and efficient, never one to leave a job half-done. But I worry about him sometimes. He’s hard on himself, always pushing to be better, always seeking approval. It’s as if he thinks that if he just works hard enough, he’ll finally be worth something. But to me, he’s always been worth it.

He’s loyal to the Guild, but I sometimes wonder if that loyalty is just another wall he’s built to keep himself from thinking about what else he could be. I see the potential in him, but it’s up to Dodger to decide whether he’ll reach for it or stay where he is, always trying to prove himself to a world that’s already moved on.

“Beautiful name for a beautiful lass. Come, let us discuss in the captain’s office, shall we? You can partake of some of Mac’s blasted cocoa.” She bellowed a laugh and led them down a step into a wooden office that fit them all well enough amid a massive desk and a couple of deep-seated chairs.

The walls held various maps of Mistral pinpointing pagemarks and blockades. There were also paintings of Henrietta with her crew and landscapes of scenic spots within Restless Rise and Mistral. Seemed as if she spent most of her time between the two. Captain Henrietta settled herself behind the desk and began to brew a pot of milk.

Currently Boarded Vehicle: Big Betty

Species: Human

Hair Color: Strawberry, wildly curly and grey touched

Often Found: In Mistral no matter the gale

Page Turner: No

Employment: Smuggler of coffee and cocoa

Captain Henrietta is a unique presence, to say the least. She’s every bit the classic sea captain (only her boat flies), with her penchant for fine clothing and a sharp eye for detail, even when out on the ship. It’s hard not to be drawn to her—there’s a charm in the way she carries herself, a mix of refinement and that old grit.

She’s got a sweet way about her, always ready with a compliment or a playful tease. She’s one of those rare individuals who can make you smile even when she’s reminding you she’s seen more of the world than you ever will. She’s savvy, and she knows how to play the part when it counts. So while I’m not losing sleep over what she’s up to, I keep a close eye on her all the same—just in case.

Anything that seems a little too inventive and magical is probably from The Court of Copper. Hope you didn't get it in a bind. They always know.

Planar Pages Logo Court
The Court of Copper, mortal page of faekin: fairies, fae, fauns, centaurs, and nymphs
Alternative Name(s):
There is only one proper name for The Court of Copper

The temperature of the page is hotter than almost any other page save Blaze. Because of this the safest places for a skimmer are the coasts of the main continent Stream. This is easy to traverse, of course, as most major cities are coastal with large harbors and plentiful ships. The coasts run up to temperate and tropical rain forests that are essential to the lives of most faekin.

But do not travel alone. Traveling into The Court of Copper without a native page turner is grounds for imprisonment as an extraplanar spy.

Areas of The Court of Copper

Continent of faekin. Courtly, majestic, and unruly. Promises made but never broken. Light and colorful. Broken into several regions:

  • Glade
  • Thicket
  • Garden
  • Hearth
  • Grove
  • Orchard
  • the Wilds

Lucent island housed pixies & centaurs long before they came to the main continent of Stream. It was there the territorial pixie-centaur war took place with perplexed fauns as innocent bystanders. Well, bystanders at least.

The nymphs’ isle. This land is a far-off island of steam and not under the purview of the Study of Seven. Skimmer, beware.

The Faekin of The Court of Copper

The faekin of The Court of Copper consist of:

  • Centaur
  • Fae
  • Fairies
  • Faun
  • Nymphs

While most notably all known outside the page as faekin, that generalized marker is not said without some emotion by anyone native to the page.

While I don't suggest this page for most skimmers I have to say I'm a bit biased. Being from Rise, sometimes I forget the wonder and beauty that is our floating home. But don't quote me on that.

Planar Pages Logo Rise
Restless Rise, mortal page of humans

Alternative Name(s)

Rise

Schiftland

Schiflan

Much of the world is mundane except for the floating islands tethered to the mountainous flat plateau in the center of the world. The islands of land masses stay still but the rise shifts and rotates around it giving the page its name. Although most know it simply as Rise.

It is unknown how the lands float or why the mountainous rise in the middle does not. But by the grace of Larrakane it has remained this way for thousands of years.

Considered a very mundane, and what some conceive as a lesser page, in The Book.

Areas of Restless Rise

Locally known as Schifland (or old Schiftland depending of your age) there are 15 county islands in the page as well as the central seat on The Plateau.

Though most people live on the central island a fair share of workers, farmers, and crafters live in the county islands.

The People of Restless Rise

In the Rise, page turners are seen akin to royalty and even those  in lower houses or among the lower populace were advanced into noblier society. Being a Turners was a gift that rippled out to others. And a curse to some who lost their place.

Mac, fae and incredible mixologist, has amazing concoctions of the alcoholic variety.

Check out the Tipsy Maelstrom, one of Fiona’s favorites in Between the Lines below! Making this cocktail/mocktail for yourself or a batch for others? @me on Instagram @dhalerambo #theplanarpages #cocktailsbymac

Also, big thanks to my cocktail connoisseur friend Jeremy who helped with these recipes! You’re the best!

Tipsy Maelstrom Cocktail

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz Grey Goose vodka (for a smooth, neutral spirit base)
  • 1 oz White crème de cacao (for a milky, frothy texture)
  • 1/2 oz Simple syrup
  • 3-4 Coffee beans (for garnish and aroma)
  • Cocoa powder (for dusting the rim)

Instructions:

  1. Rim a chilled martini glass by rubbing the rim with a coffee bean and dipping in cocoa powder.
  2. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes.
  3. Add the vodka, crème de cacao and simple syrup.
  4. Shake or stir vigorously until well chilled. The crème de cacao will provide a frothy, creamy texture.
  5. Strain into the prepared martini glass.
  6. Garnish with 1-2 coffee beans dropped on top and a light dusting of additional cocoa powder over the foam.
  7. Optionally, gently swirl or zig-zag a skewer through the foam to create a maelstrom pattern.

The swirling skewer and maelstrom name reference the turbulent, spinning motion of crashing ocean waves. The gray-white color comes from the crème de cacao foam over clear vodka. The martini glass and high alcohol content make this a strong, stylish cocktail.

Mocktail Version

Ingredients:

  • 2 shots espresso
  • 1 oz Ghirardelli White Chocolate Sauce
  • 1/2 oz Simple Syrup
  • (optional) Whipped Cream ice

Instructions:

  1. Rim a chilled glass by rubbing the rim with a coffee bean and dipping in cocoa powder.
  2. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes.
  3. Add the espresso, white chocolate sauce and simple syrup (if desired)
  4. Shake or stir vigorously until well chilled. The white chocolate sauce will provide a frothy, creamy texture.
  5. Pour over ice into the prepared glass.
  6. Garnish with whipped cream, 1-2 coffee beans dropped on top and a light dusting of additional cocoa powder over the foam.
  7. Optionally, gently swirl or zig-zag a skewer through the foam to create a maelstrom pattern.

Hey there wanderer, fancy a peek behind the curtain? A little look at what, or rather whom, is responsible for inspiring all this. As March 8th is International Women’s Day it’s a great opportunity to give a shoutout to inspirational women. So please indulge me in this little thank you to a few of the women who inspired me to write.

3. The Transporter
Growing up. when I went garage sale shopping with my grandmother, I was allowed to buy whatever book I wanted. Did I always buy the quote-unquote best books? Absolutely not. But I struck gold as a ten-year-old with Julie Garwood’s historical romance novels.

Julie Garwood was the first romance author who showed me the spirit and swaggering bravado one could have in a single book. The vignettes of eras past and the sweet romance within the pages were thrilling to me.

Her words made me imagine other worlds and other places. I felt transported by words on a page; the magic of storytelling.

When I was ten years old, I wrote to her, all excited, about my plan of making The Lions Lady into a movie when I grew up. Because who didn’t want to make movies growing up in the 90s? I was thrilled when she wrote back. That always made an impression on me. If someone like JULIE GARWOOD  understood my creativity and drive, who thought I should strive for it, what couldn’t I do?

So far, only one of her novels, ‘For the Roses’, has been adapted into a movie,  ‘Rose Hill’ (1997), so I still have a chance at Hollywood! Or Hallmark.

If you want to delve into the romance, you can find Garwood’s backlist, including The Lion’s Lady, at www.juliegarwood.com

2. The Comfort Zone Expansionist
This author helped to expand my comfort zone, both in reading and author self-expression.

Gail Carriger is one of the most fun and authentic people I have ever read. Her books are fun, mysterious, and loveable, and so is her manner as an author.

Influenced by PG Wodehouse and Jane Austen, Carriger writes comedies of manners mixed with steampunk, sci-fi, or urban fantasy. She also writes cozy queer joy as GL Carriger.

When I started reading her works almost thirteen years ago, they were completely out of my comfort zone. But straight away there was a connection to who I was and who I would grow to be; one that I’ve not found since.

Her most well-known work is The ParasolVerse. Imagine a steampunk British Empire with werewolves and vampires. If you can’t, you need to pick up the Parasol Protectorate series, Finishing School series (prequel), and The Custard Protocol series (sequel.)

I’m even inspired by the women in her novels. Let’s just say that Alexia (‘Soulless’) is *chef’s kiss* when I think of clever, witty women who figure it out for everyone else and can turn a polite phrase into an insult that sparks action.

I’ve also enjoyed every newsletter, blog post, and little asides. They are engaging as heck. And you know that can’t be easy to keep up for a decade.

Gail Carriger’s transparency with her readers showed me that it is okay to let your guard down. That genuine connection and openness means you might be able to write a story worth telling.

You can find out more about Gail Carriger and her work at www.gailcarriger.com. I highly recommend subscribing to her newsletter!

The Honourable Mentions
Before I share the third inspirational woman, an honorable mention must go to two other women; the Queen of Jazz, Ella Fitzgerald, and English novelist, Jane Austen. If you’ve not spent time with the work of either woman, please do. You won’t regret it!

1. The Quiet Supporter
Now, I’m a big fan of variety reading. I was brought up on a healthy diet of epic fantasy, historical fantasy, comedic sci-fi, chick lit, and romance novels. And you know I love creating stories in diverse worlds.

But the access to a wide variety of books and the space to discover myself might not have happened without my grandmother, Nana.

I was not an easy child. I was capricious, dramatic, and acted out a lot. Nana was not one to mess around. Though a working woman with three grown children, she and my grandfather made it their duty to help raise me. Nana was ever supportive, letting me find my own way.

Though I probably shouldn’t have been reading steamy romances, odd historical fantasy, or sword and sorcery, she allowed me an unobstructed view of the world and encouraged long hours of reading. Even when we were supposed to be hanging out together. Once I had a book in my hand, I was useless, but she never complained. She was quietly supportive in a way that I never appreciated as a child.

My diverse worldview and penchant for singing in the middle of the supermarket aisle is because of her.

My desire to write characters that are unique and deeply loving is because my Nana showed me there are many ways to be inspirational in the world. You simply have to find your own way, with loving hands to guide you.

If you’re new to my work and want to take a look at the worlds I’ve created since these women came into my life, please check out my books.

In the meantime, let me know in the comments about the women who have inspired you.

Dear skimmers, Cobbles rocks! Literally. Visitors must come prepared for small spaces and much digging. Those who dislike enclosed areas are best off skipping this page. ~ Fiona Thorne

Planar Pages Logo Cobbles
Cobbles, page of earth, contains gnomes and other earth elementals

Alternative Name(s)

Sod (interjection) Used by non-denizens; insult – used by some turners. “Sod it, I’m not turning the page there“.

Note: Sod (proper noun) is also the language of the page.

The realm of solid matter, Cobbles is naught but an endless expanse of unyielding stone and pure earth. Though it is quite stuffed with mineral riches, their true value is in the eye of the beholder, often an earth elemental or rock worm.

Although Cobbles is mainly gray rock as far as the eye can see, it does still have its surprises. Every manner of stone can be found here and there are rich veins of metal.

Denizens of Cobbles and rock enthusiasts alike regard the Page of Earth as one step removed from paradise. For those who enjoy having space to move around and dislike the constant oppressive weight of potentially being crushed, Cobbles is not the most comfortable of destinations.

Realms of Cobbles Page

Bipbipblurg – the gnome city closest to the pagemark of the Travel Guild. The entrance to Bipbipblurg is a massive wall of soft rock full of oval openings. Each opening leads to a tunnel of packed soil tall enough for a gnome to traverse. An unprepared and larger individual may find travel more difficult.

Earth Folks, Beasts, and Monsters

Usually hairless with pinkish-red or purple skin, gnomes tend to have pupilless eyes, wide bulbous noses, and toothless mouths.

Fairly common in Cobbles. Mostly harmless as well as long as you don’t have any gems, paper, dirt, or earth on you. Mind your bags.
